A Case of Epiglottic Abscess

Abstract

|
Epiglottitis is more commonly seen in children less than 6 years of age, although this entity has also been well described among adults. A coalescence of infection of the epiglottis, or epiglottic abscess, has been infrequently reported in series of epiglottitis. Recently we encountered a case of men with a 3-day history of sore throat, odynophagia, and altered voice. Flexible fiberoptic endoscopy revealed an edematous, yellow colored epiglottis. Plain radiography and computed tomography demonstrated an epiglottic abscess. The patient underwent direct laryngoscopy, intubation, drainage of abscess, and intravenous antibiotics. The patient had an excellent recovery without complication. We report a case of epiglottic abscess with a review of literature.
